This will sound like a totally foreign subject to many of you and very surprising, but this winter was the first time that my almost 4 year old, Atakan, saw snow in person! He was born in Kansas City in April of 2008 and we spent most of the early winter of 2008 in Mersin, Turkey where it doesn't snow and when we returned to the US we moved to Florida at the end of January 2009, so he really never got a chance to see or play in the snow.
Our winter has been unusually cold and harsh, which meant lots of snow in the mountains just north of us. A few weeks ago we headed to the mountains for a few hours of fun. It was only a short drive (30 minutes) and tons of fun. All Atakan could ask was if he could eat the snow! We had a discussion about only eating clean white snow:)) A week later we headed to Erciyes which is a volcanic mountain only about 3 hours from here that is a ski resort. There are probably 3 lifts and 4 hotels so it is a great little village. The really amazing part was that there was no snow at the base of the mountain and we drove up only about 10 minutes to tons of snow! That weekend the reports online said there was 73 cm of snow on the mountain. We had time skiing as well as just enjoying the snow outside. The wind was blowing so hard that the snow was actually stuck in the boys eyelashes! Hopefully we'll get another trip to Erciyes this winter!
